PHOTOGRAPHY EXPEDITIONS

I made my first trip to Costa Rica in December, 2000 and fell in love with the country. The rainforest, the wildlife, and the way of life. I came to understand their friendly greeting of "Pura Vida" or "Pure Life". It is a country with a wide array of diversity. I knew I had to go back, but this time with a group of photographers getting a chance to document the beauty that I saw. In the two of summers, 2001, 2002, that dream came true as I have brought people on a once in a lifetime journey to experience and photograph a remarkable country. Lasting friendships were made both with the groups, and with the people we encountered along the way. It truly was a memorable experience for all.
The first year focused on Costa Rica while this second summer we expanded to include Nicaragua and Panama. Between the two trips participants have experienced a myriad of adventures. Hikes in dense rainforest, countless wild animal sightings, the opportunity to photography small town cultures, and a visit to the Cabecar Bri-Bri Indians. Not to mention a night hike to watch Green Sea Turtles lay their eggs, bathing in hot springs under an active volcano, a five day boat trip along the rivers on the border of Nicaragua/Costa Rica, and perching on a tree platform 13 stories up to view and photograph the top of the canopy. These are only a few of the many, many opportunities we had to document and absorb all that was around us.
My background includes over twenty years of making photographic images. I have both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Fine Arts degree in the medium. I have taught photography at the college level for seven years. So to bring the classroom out into the wild truly has been rewarding for me.
Accompanying me with these trips have been exceptional guides under the leadership of my friend Rolando Arburola. I came to meet Rolando on my first trip to his country and this is where the dream began. His guides' knowledge of the rainforest, topography, plants, and animals is invaluable in experiencing both the culture and habitat we photograph. His expertise truly makes the trips more meaningful in terms of our understanding.
